He is in a tank with pool filter sand and fairly light in color, but when he is behind a darker rock or plant he turns an almost olive green but still keeps the spots

Awesome thanks for the ID guys! What gives it away if u don't mind me asking? I thought those guys were all black with white spots not tan with dark spots

Definitely Paratilapia, probably polleni, but at that age it's hard to tell. There is also P. bleekeri, typus and andapa, among others.
