A friend's daughter caught this fish down here in Florida, and they are curious what it could be. I'm thinking either a Tilapia of some sort or a Central American Cichlid. Any IDs?

Yeah,looks like a tiapia to me.
 
......no idea of the particular species though.
 
I agree, one of the Tilapines, they all look very sililar, and will also hybridize.
They are very common, I would see hundreds in every pond I passed from Sarasota on south.

It looks to be oreachromis mossambicus.
A sub adult male.mature males develop big duck like lips.A very prolific species indeed.

Oreochromis mossambicus (or a hybrid of)

Or as I call it the common talapia. Their everywhere down here. I'm in Sarasota and you can't find a body of freshwater or even some brackish areas with them around.
