A woman came in for a water testing at work today. and the water was blue so i was like wtf? And she says she keeps her fish in blue water with food coloring :screwy::screwy:

I didnt know what to say because Ive never heard of it and wasnt sure what to tell her about doing that. But she says shes had her koi in it for over 3 years and they r doin fine. What are your opinions on it?

If the fish don't need it, don't add it.

This seems like a terrible idea. Some argue that food coloring is vegetable based and therefore harmless but who is to say what it can do to the respiratory system of the fish. We are all aware how unhealthy preservatives and additives are in our own diet, imagine breathing them in daily. Many fish are quite hearty and resilient and perhaps surviving for 3 years immersed in dye is more a testament to their strength rather than proof of their indifference to food coloring.

some say it helps in ponds. The blue will reflect more of the suns rays keeping temp lower, plus it will inhibit algae growth. I dunno about food coloring, but they do make a specific dye for ponds.

i dunno i kinda told her i didnt think it was a good idea because it would probably damage the fishes respiratory system. but she kept sayin yea but theyve been fine for years. I would never do it myself... but i just wonderin if anyone knew if it was harmful...

If studies shows that it is harmless on it, I woudn't mind trying it on one of my smaller tank...Maybe a good color which would bring out the fish colors. :D

theres a miniature golf course in cape cod that has carp swimming around in a connected pond system, and the water is very dark deep blue. i think it sucks for the fish, must be like swimming thru mud, very tough to see anything.

Blue water with food coloring? Is it the food coloring itself that causes the water to turn blue or is this simply an overdose of dechlorinator or methylene blue with food coloring added?
