Im half way into a project: "my long term holding tank for my CA's".Today I notice since I have been keeping my oscar, zonatus and 1 grammodes in seperate 45g rubbermaid totes for the last 2 weeks until I came up with another idea to house them. My oscar would be the only fish out and about 55% of the time the others hiding. Well today I moved them into a a 40g inorder to remove the bulkheads from the rubbermaid tote to install on the 250g plastic tote. and after a minute both the zonatus and grammdes are out swimming around.
Before all they did was hide eveytime anyone came near their totes, now the just hold their postion even if I tap the glass.
Is this because the could not see throught the plastic, but can thru the glass? Should I paint the sides of my new holding tank black or dark blue to resemble a pond affect? I have heard that fish are naturally afraid of things above the water, but fish in pond hang out near the top.

Anyone with a reasonable answer please respond. Im almost done with setting up the plumbing next is the let the water cycle hopfully im not headed in the wrong direction with this.
