Can I start a SW tank with crushed coral bed and fish only? I want to add live rock later. Can I do this or should I just wait until I have everything together?

Most people will tell you to use sugar like grain sized aragonite instead of crushed coral because it will compact and wont allow detrius material to escape your clean ups. If you opt to stick with crushed coral you could be risking alot as I read the other day crushed coral is one of the main causes of SW aqaurium crashes.

As far as crushed coral goes I'm a 100% hater! I don't think that it belongs in any marine tank ,"well other than a couple of cups if you have a sand dwelling gobie or shrimp". It's cheap it's availiable but, I would only use it for f.w. tanks that need their ph altered!

The tank was up and running when I got it. I want to change it to sand, but it is pricey.
