well, from the title you might already have guessed what happened. So anyways, I was changing my 55 gallon tank from sand to gravel since the sand gave me sink-clogging and dirty tank problems. So I took out all my fish, my 6 dempseys and 2 plecos, around 2 - 3 1/2 inches long into a yellow bucket and also put in an air stone. Then I went out to clean the tank out with water and start to clean the gravel. After about 10 - 15 minutes, I walk up to the bucket to make sure my fish are ok. All of my sudden, i see my biggest dempsey on the floor, about less than 3 inches, motionless. I WAS FREAKING OUT IN MY HEAD. I hate dead things, when i see a dead bird on the street I jump about a foot into the air. UGH. so anyways, i come along with a net ( thats how scared I am ) and am able to get the fish into the net. I quickly dropped the net into the bucket with the fish in the net, praying it would be alive. After that, I got up and saw a feeder on the floor! So this was my conclusion right at that moment. feeder + dempsey = dempsey and feeder out of water. That was when I remember i dropped in a guppy to which was about 3 days old cuz it was smart and hid behind the heater.

Luckily, my dempsey was alright. After I cleaned up the tank, I peered every so slowly into the net and my dempsey was fine! I was so happy. Never will i add another feeder into a bucket with fish again!

smart conclusion. Im suprised he wanted to eat with all the potential stress of being scooped out of his home and crammed in a bucket.

Bucket lids can have the center part cut out and replaced with heavy plastic screening, it prevents excited or frightened fish from making a sudden exit. I was thigh deep in a crreek with a very nice pikeminnow in a 5g bucket when the bugger decided to leave, it went straight up from the bucket and bounced off my face back into the creek.

i think everyone has delt with that at some point in their fish keeping time. the other day i was doing some similar tank work and i had my 14.5" gar in what i would guess is a 30-40 gal foam cooler and while i was working i heard a thump on the floor. i come running back into the room knowing exactly what happened. i just grabbed him quick and placed him back in the cooler w/ the lid over it but not sealed. no harm done but it freaked me out! i learned a lesson too!

Lucky for you Demjor, you heard a THUMP. I didnt hear anything since these guys are really small.

Haha guppy, the minnow bounced off your face and left :)

yeah im pretty sure the gar is a lil bigger! lol at least your fish was ok too.

A plastic grocery store bag will fit perfectly over a bucket as well, it is not air tight but it will prevent jumpers most of the time
