fish out of water

Depends on the species, but as a rule of thumb, it's best to have a fish out of water for the shortest time possible.
 
Yeah... It depends on species.. Some for a couple of minutes...while some for a couple of hours.. It depneds on other factors too..
 
As stated above, it varies from species to species, some delicate fish can only survive a couple minutes but others such as some snakeheads, paddy eels, or climbing perch can survive in a damp environment for hours. Some types of ling fish and catfish can (given some preparation time) live for months buried in dry mud.
