I have this 36"x18" 40 gallon tank that I want to put together.

So far the only thing going into it for sure is a 4" Crayfish but I'd like to have some other fish in there.

I thought of maybe a few Pink Tailed Chalceus but read that they would need a far bigger tank - at least 100 gallons.

So what could I probably put into this tank?

I'd like some kind of predatory fish but I don't really want any kind of Cichlids.

I'd just stay away from bottom fish that might get attacked by the crayfish...so some kind of midwater or top water dweller, maybe a school of exodons

and you cant get anything to predatious or it might eat your crayfish.

africans and other SA cichlids are probably out, yeah. Its tough housing anything with a crayfish for both reasons.

Maybe try a school of Tiger Barbs? Though you may wake up and find 1 less every day.
Not sure.

I thought about a few Purple Spotted Gudgeons. They've been popping up at LFS and Petsmarts all over my area for some reason and at this one place they have them at about 2 inches. I hear they max out at about 6-7" however they're mid level/bottom level fish...

I also thought about a school of Red Finned Tin Foil Barbs but that'd be ridiculous. =\
