Hey all

So figured Id post something of my own after reading so much from this site but staying in the shadows ;)

I had it all nicely put out but the uploader would not go away so.... I am going to cut it down a lot encase it does it once again!

Anyways I have 8x8x2.5M room the whole room can be filled with tanks!!!! I have been planning this for about 10-12 months but the plan has changed a lot sence then!

I have just picked up 4x6x2x2 and some 8x18x18 and 2 7x18x18 tanks! ( was hoping someone could help me with the sump! I have no idea about sumps they always seemed like a waste of a tank too me but it came with the setup, the only sump I have running has a intake and return, the new has 3 holes cut out on one tank 2 in the base ( I imagine the intake to sump) and 1 on the top for return I believe? The second tank has none in the bottom and just 3 in the top about 5-6 inches from the roof of the tank? I cant figure out how this would work without a pump inside the tank or in the sump pulling down? have I got it figured out right? I tried google and mfk search but I think my keywords are off! I would upload some pictures but I am still sore from yesterday, I can draw it up on paint using a basic tank if someone is willing to help?

Anyways here are the pictures and I will add the planned stock list in a hour or so and a more in depth plan if it works this time around!

You can do a single sump for all your tanks if you want. You can keep a heater in that single sump and also set up a simple water changer "trickle system" so you won’t have to do water changes. A single sump is the way to go for a fish room because all the tanks are so close together, it keeps the maintenance time low.

wow! it looks like you are going to have some fun!!! i love setting up tanks.
i see one hole in the bottom of one tank (from your pictures). that hole is for an overflow to a sump. it can be set up with an "overflow box" with surface skimming "teeth", you would have to buy or make that and it would need to be a box or glass siliconed into place. you can use a pipe also that just sticks up to the surface of the water. look at these http://barraquatic.com/overflows.php for an idea of what i mean. they can be custom built to fit your needs.

i agree the holes in the top are for returns.

each tank will need a hole in the bottom, or the side, if you want to drain water to a sump. you can use one sump for all your tanks. the only problem with that is that they will have common water, same temp, hardness, pH and disease. the up side is the "trickle filter" idea that helps with water changes.

keep asking, there is lots of help here

-1 that would be a really bad idea if one tank gets parasites the whole system gets it.

Thanks guys!

Yeah I am leaning away from a single sump, Mainly just going to use aquaclear 70s x2 on each tank with a sponge filter then eheim jaggers which works out pretty cheap also 48 units in total and looking at just under 2000, seems pretty fair too me :)

Thanks sarmo for that! kind of makes sense now, I think I might just try to take some better pictures tonight to show the 7FT as I really do believe it needs an actual pump to get the sump going, I need to read a lot about sumps never done one before :( other one came setup.

Anyways I will post pictures from time to time but its hard to get much done with work being so busy due to the holidays!

I know you are in heaven.

haha yeah! its nice to have the big room to work with and the fact it was already instulated was a major bonus! (double layer sand brick)!

too top it all up I found a kinda LFS about 50 minutes away that stocks a nice range of cichlids at a fair price. Now I just need to figure out the dam sump setup!

oh god... lol if you remove the couches how will u watch the fishy!!! my room has a sofa going in just for that purpose :D

I am going to have to make a new thread on this sump I am too dumb to understand it lol it makes sense in a sense because you can have 2 tanks on top of one another both drilled under, I think i need bulk heads for a start ;D
