I want to build some tank stands to better organize my "fish room" (my bed room with tanks sporadically placed in it). I came up with a design that has two shelves and would fit either 1 55 gallon, two 29 gallons, or three 10 gallons on each shelf. However, this does waste some room. Would it be better to build stands specifically for each kind of tank or a universal stand? What do you guys do in your fish rooms?

I think i will build the stands to fit one kind of tank. How much room do you guys have for clearance between the top of the tank and the bottom of the next 2x4? Bud, the way you drilled out your tanks for water changes would be awesome but I don't think I'm going to go that far yet.

I would like to get started on these either today or tomorrow. I think I'm going to make the stands 3 tanks high for the 55s How should I make the joints on the middle shelf so that it is strong enough. I'm thinking I'm going to rabbet the peices so they fit together.

one suggestion for your builds:

I have a 65g/50g stacked setup (tube steel stand) in the corner of my fishroom and there is 5 inches of clearance for the bottom tank (50g).

this is about as tight as you can get.

leaving 6-8" of distance between the bottom of the top shelf and the bottom tank would be even better.

take this into account when doing the measurements.

hope this helps.

you can see what I mean here: there is 5" of clearance.

try to leave 6-8" if possible, but 5" is still doable.

You planned on buying a ladder, right?

I have it all designed and I'm going to get wood now. I don't know how to get screen shots so I can post pics of the design. Its going to fit 3 55s and be 7'9 1/2" tall and the ceiling is at 7'10".

wait a sec.

so you are going to have 1/2" clearance for the top tank?

you need to change that.

the other thing is that it might be 'tippy'.

55's are narrow and at three tanks high, this could be a concern.

not sure.

you might be better to go two stacked instead??

I'm no expert by any means in building stands but half an inch isn't even possible. Unless you mean the wood will be half an inch from the cieling. You can't have a tank be half an inch from the ceiling.
