Looking at setting up my fish room. I need some advice on what you would do for setting up your fish room as far as filtration, water changes, etc. I will be running around 30, 30 gallon tanks to begin and go from there. I will be doing many types of fish to include angels, cichlids, discus, livebearers, etc. I know you will all want lots more info, so I will just add more as it comes up. Looking for what you would do different if you have one or what you want to do when doing yours.

Thanks

Plumb tanks together wherever possible... as larger water systems are easier to maintain with stability...

I have a few stacks of two 50 gal tanks plumbed into a 75 gal tank each stacked above one another... I'm very happy with these set ups...

Heat the room as a whole, not the individual tanks...

Definitely buy a dehumidifier. Also keep in mind dehumidifiers create heat. I was able to keep my 20' x 13' insulated fish room at 80*F in the dead of winter using two dehumidifiers as the sole source of heat.

Consider buying a large air pump and run a ton of sponge filters. You may or may not wish to run additional filters, but nothing will be cheaper to set up and maintain than sponge filters powered by a centrail air pump.

Make practicality the key to every plan/design.

Yep. Sponge filters and a large air pump would do it.

So If you use sponge filters, then there is not a need to plumb the tanks together is there?

I have about 7 30 gallon tanks to start with and was thinking of drilling them, but am now thinking maybe just doing sponge filters.

What brand of dehumidifier do you recommend and where do you recommend buying them from?

you are correct. there is no need to drill if you have sponge filters, but you will have to do water changes on every tank. The benefit of drilling would also allow you to have a drip system.

I agree, I have sponge filters in all of my tanks 55 and smaller. Great for filtration and bio media mixture. Easy cleaning in dechlorinated water. Economics of not having to replace filter media makes it worth it.
