I bought a dempsey from a lfs last Saturday but didn't notice until i got home that she had a small white fungus on one of her fins. I raised the temp on the tank to ~84, added a little bit of salt, and did small water changes every other day. The fungus area grew smaller until yesterday when it was gone. I did around a 30% water change in the afternoon, but did not turn the heaters on until the evening at a lower setting of 78 to lower the aggression level of the dempsey. The dempsey was swimming up and down the glass during the afternoon after the water change and then rubbing her sides on the gravel and driftwood later in the evening. There are no visible parasites and her exterior or in the gills. I turned the temperature back up to 84 thinking it was parasites. This morning, she seems to be acting normal swimming around bottom and middle of the tank. All the levels were 0 after the 30% water change and I use stress coat with water changes. The tank is a 40g breeder with a clown pleco in it as well. The clown pleco has been acting normal. The dempsey is about 2.5 inches (this is a grow out tank for a few months)

Could she just have been freaking out after the water change meaning i could lower the temp or should i leave the temperature up? Any other thoughts? I have never really seen a fish act like this then act perfectly normal a short time later. From my experience, it usually means problems.

For those who quarantine new fish, how long do you do it for?

Thanks ahead of time for any help

I qt fish for about three weeks before introducing them to a display tank. I also treat woth prazi for IP's during this time.

I would treat the tank by increasing the temp to 86 and adding 1 tsp of salt for every 5 galllons of water. If you are experiancing the on set of an ich outbreak this should do the trick in about a week or so. We just addressed this situation in several threads so ther is plenty of info for you to read.

Just keep an eye on it. Sometimes they get an itch and rub their body on rocks and decor. If it becomes constant and the fish is scratching the same spot Qt it.

What kind of salt?

Aquarium salt (sodium chloride) or you can by kosher salt at the supermarket. It must be pure sodium chloride with no additives.
