How do you know when your fish is getting to big, and needs to be transferred to a bigger tank so it could grow more?

Personally for me I would say if the fish is almost as long as the width of the aquarium , and I know that fish will get longer, and have difficulty turning around. For example grew out a baby arowana , first had it in a 29 when aro was half the width transferred aro to a 55 , and when aro got almost 1ft transferred it to a 180, that was the last move because at 14inches aro jumped out and was found dead. There are other variables also such as will your bio-filtration support the bioload of the fish. The method of inch per gallon is used by some. Everyone good fish Hobbyists has their own method.:)

the inch per gallon thing is bad bologna, big dif between say a 12 Oscar and a 12" cat or poly. the Oscar has a much larger body mass and is a much larger bio load because of it.

so to answer your question it really comes down to the fish you have. I would have no problem with a bilcher in a 55g. on the other hand, I would with an oscar.

and then there is the whole room to swim and be a fish foot print. while a 3ft by 2ft by 3ft tank has allot of water, not a tank I would put on Oscar or jag in, even if the water volume good enof.
