Fish Stroke????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
it's possible. If something has blood, it could have a blood clot too. Really don't know what could be done to help it or prevent it. Just keep an eye out and I guess be prepared to (unfortunely) euthanize if the quality of life drops down to a really bad level. If it was a stroke, it won't get any better. The only other possiblity that comes to mind is if the fish freaked out and slammed into the side of the tank causing disorientation and maybe mild nerve damage. That should improve a bit, but not completely if he hit hard enough.

I remember that a guy did his speach on animal metal and physical disabilities. Seems domesticated animals are the only ones that can survive vast majority of these problems. The rest just die off on their own or are killed by members in the group. Maybe in the future we will be able to do a tripple byepass on a cichla. Sorry about the loss.

Typically the sidewinder action of fish is caused when a neurological block causes there body to turn off. Barbs are very well known for doing this when suffering from ammonia poisoning.

Update.

Well it looks like the fish sin't swimming right 99% of the time it doesn't even swim at all. It just sits on the bottom of the tank. It's not even eating right now. I don't see it recovering from this. Gonna give it a little more time, if no imporvements I will probably have to euthenize it. :(

Without a professional diagnosis, it would be nearly impossible to diagnose a stroke in an aquarium fish. I have had fish panic, crash into the top or side of the aquarium, and then swim erratically. Some recover within a few days, others do not and after 4 to 6 weeks of not eating and resting on the bottom most of the time, they die.

I had four Leporinus Fasciatus in a 120-gallon community aquarium when one hit the tank wall, hard. Interestingly the other three Leporinus tried to lift it off the bottom and keep it swimming. This went on for several days, with the “helper” fish having some success, however eventually the erratically swimming fish died.
