My friend has a 20 gal. tank (long) which he plans on either throwing away or giving it away when he moves. Obviously I said that I would take it. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions of what kind of fish would go well in it. I would prefer S.A. cichlids so if only one fish would do well in it don't hesitate to respond. Thanks!

Try some dwarf cichlids like rams or Apistogramma. You could even get away with a pair. You could also try keyholes if you can get them.

Honduran red points, rainbows, mixtecos, keyholes, smaller angels. Probably could get away with a pair of one or a mix of singles. Going a little larger, a firemouth (I think a pair of those would be pushing things).

Keyholes or jewel cichlids are awesome for that kind of thing, but Jewels are African CIchlids.
Convicts, Honduran Redpoints, etc... are Central Americans, so would not fit your bill.
Some of the rarer ones are quite nice - Biotodoma cupido, or some of the smaller Geophagus would be sweet.

cockatoo dwarf cichlids would be great a pair and a small school of neon tetras or something similar in size would work great

breeding german blue rams and tetras if you wan't
