I have a fish that appears to be dying and has been swimming upside down for hours. It seems as if he might be dying and he tries to right himself, but ends up on the bottom upside down. I feel really bad for him as he has had a history of bacterial disorders of his fins that he had when I got him. I don't want him to suffer. I was thinking about putting him in the freezer or bleeding him to death. What are your thoughts? Or should I just let nature take it's course?

Thanks!

I would put him in the freezer.

If you can bear the gore, a quick swing to the head with a knife would do.

Well I went with the freezer method. I felt so bad, but I am not sure why. I mean when I am out fishing I have no problems with my hooking my shiners in the back under the dorsal fin. Why would it be different for me to freeze my fish?

It seemed to go fast BTW.

This is why people keep clove oil on hand.

I keep it on hand. I have had to only use it a few times, and in extreme cases but I always keep it available along with an instruction sheet I found to administer it it properly.

Even clove oil improperly done can be a pretty bad way for a fish to have to go.

How can you properly dose clove oil?

It's either not enough, and you anesthetize the fish, or too much and it dies.

I don't use an instruction sheet, and I've never measured to put a fish down, and I've never had any issues.
