hi, i have a 55g demasoni, yellow lab mix tank and was wondering if having there light really really dim would hurt anything or do they like brighter lights

Those fish wouldn't care if it was almost dark all the time. The lights are for you to look at them. Nicer lights might help you enjoy their colors more, but it will do nothing to help the fish.

Agreed. I like the combination of 50/50 and 10K bulbs on my African tanks. I only keep them on for about 2-3 hours a day to limit algea growth. They do not mind at all.

IMO the more light the better. These fish are used to direct sunlight 12hr/day. Also strong light grows good algae which is good for the fish to graze on.
