Hello guys, this will be my last of the series of questions for my new 200g tank. So the stand I built is 72 inches long but the tank is 78 inches long, building a new stand is not an option. I was thinking of stacking wood up to match the height of the stand(3/4 of an inch) and then put another piece of wood on top of all of it to make sure it is completely flat. The guys at the fish store said this should work just fine, just wanted to see what you guys had to say.

If you're planning on stacking wood anyway, why not just screw it to the sides? Either way, assuming the wood you stack is solid, I don't see any reason it wouldn't work. Although, I'd be concerned that the stacked wood and the stand would not settle at the same rate. However, this could be overcome with the top board you add. I would feel more comfortable with a yoga mat or styrofoam though (in addition).

Can you post a pic of your stand?

One idea is to find a single slab of thick wood(1.5"+) 78" long and wide enough to fit the tank, center it and fasten it to the top of your stand. 3" overhanging off the ends shouldnt be a big issue.

Another option is to just fasten 4x4 pillars off both end corners of the stand, which would add another 3.5" of support on each end.

Whatever you do, I would try to add support to both ends symmetrically. Once i tried to build an "addition" on to a 6' 220 stand to try and accommodate a 7' 260 and it ended up looking bad and performed even worse.
