Hey Guys

Finished moving my tanks around for the last time but have an issue, we had to move 2 sumps outside also to get the exact look and I really loved it so hoping I could keep my sumps outside the garage?

My idea was to use my 100MM EPS foam insulation (like I use in the fishroom) and glue this to the sumps base and sides then build a wooden frame that sits just on the outside of the insulation which can be lifted up with ease or make the top open. I will also place a sheet of EPS in the roof (most important part imo). I would also screw some thin wood sheets to the sides of my box.

Now I can place the sumps right up against the garage door so in theory I could make the box 3 sides and rest 1 side against my fishroom insulation, then drill holes for the pipes etc. Would this be efficient in holding heat? I heat my whole fishroom and it holds heat perfectly, So seeing as I am using the same insulation etc in my head it should be fine long as its air tight?

I live in Australia- Victoria, summer its hot enough to leave everything open no heater required day and night. winter it gets cold but very rarely into the - normally from memory at night the coldest we get is 3-5 and 10-14 during the days.

with the main vol of water being in the fish room with a heater going on the days its required my thinking is, the water will be holding heat also and this will be constantly mixing in the sump so it should heat the box up to the same temp of the room making it safe?

My only other issue is with horizontal run from my pumps will this result in a large lph/gph loss? Its not the same as head height so the pumps not pushing harder but the distance will be longer then when the pumps where sitting behind the tanks or near them. I am using waveline DC pumps @ 10,000LPH with a 8M head height (from memory) the pump runs 32mm piping by default and most of my drain pipes are 32-40-50mm bulkheads-pipes (cant hurt having a bigger bulkhead). So Would I need to buy large rated pumps? Maxium horizontal run would be 2-3m for one system and for the other 4-5M.

Thanks in advance any experience advice ideas would be great!

( I will update my fish room log tomorrow also for those keen for some pictures :) )

An insulated wooden box around the sump should do the trick, so long as it is sealed well. You'll probably need it more to keep the tank cool in summer than warm in winter!

As for the head loss per M of pipe, I can't recall the exact figures but the calculations to work it out have been quoted here before (have a look in one of the Stickies?), I'd just make sure you're using large diameter piping to reduce the friction loss, and if needed upgrade the pump.
