I have a 55g tank that is a little too big for a spare stand i have. The stand i veeeery sturdy, the only problem is that the tank will stick out 2 inches on each end. Would thisbe a problem? I have done this before with a 10g and o problems came, but im not sure about a 55g.

Should it be fine with two inches sticking out on each end, or should i just save up for a few months and buy a proper sized stand?

Save up and get a proper one or make one. The black trim on the bottom of the tank is meant to be supported on the tank. The smaller tanks you can sometimes get away with it, but when you get larger, the possibilites for a accident happening gets bigger and bigger.

well, tank is a couple years old, bought it from someone on craigslist, and the black trim will be supported, just not on the end. i can take a pic of it empty to show what i mean?

Agreeded. A 55 gal aquarium will easily weigh a couple hundred pounds. Fish tanks need to distribute the weight evenly through the stand. By having a smaller stand it will the tank unsupported and will leave u with a fractured tank.

My 55g tank is sitting on a stand that's also slightly smaller than it, leaving an inch or two out on the end. It's been fine for a month, but tomorrow i'm moving it to a stand that i made from tiles and such. I guess it'll be fine for a short period but i would recommend getting the right stand for your tank for the long run.

If you are into DIY, get some plywoods and add some to the sides to extend the stand.
Only thing you need to make sure is that both the stand and plywood are same height and leveled
