I'm just curious about other people's experience with fish they've really wanted and been thoroughly disappointed, or fish they have kept before and exceeded expectations, or fish they were not expecting much from and were surprised with.

My biggest disappointed since I've got back into fish is definitely the wolf fish.

I once saw one when I was about 10 years old, around a foot long with a mouth full of huge teeth and I thought it was amazing. I've wanted one ever since.

Suffice to say - this was the first fish I bought a few months ago when I setup a tank for the first time in years.

And it's SOOOOOOOOOO boring. It hardly ever moves, usually waits till I go to sleep before it eats a feeder fish or even a piece of prawn or beefheart. it's not active or aggressive. It looks great, nice example of a mal, and it has a cool way of swimming if it does ever move but it's just like a turd with teeth.

it's not even that voracious and hungry.

I put 2 oscars with it to spice the tank up a bit, maybe kick the wolf into action, and there has been the odd scuffle but the wolf is incredibly boring.

in fact I'm going to sell the wolf and keep the oscars, they are much more fun. Really entertaining fish. Active and hungry and funny watching them cram as many whole tigerprawns into their mouth as they can :D

Which brings me to my pleasant surprise - oscars. I've never owned any before, never been much of a cichlid man. I like pure predators. I always thought oscars seemed cool for cichlids, but was never overly enamoured with them. They are far more fun to keep than I thought they would be, and they've really grown on me.

And the fish that's exceeded my expectations is the little albino snakehead i have. I previously owned a giant snakehead that got over 2 foot, and that was a total killer, but this one is even more so at a young age.

I love snakeheads and owning one again has just made me realize they are the ultimate predator. Active, hungry, vicious, aggressive, fast, relentless - just everything you could want from a predator.

the geophagus i had totally threw me as it is not something i would usually have bought but it was one of the best fish i have owned and was also the first to die on me for no apparent reason.
i am still looking for one to replace it now it was a 6-7'' altifrons and i want a few actually.
i dont really have a worst fish just a few i was not that bothered about after buying them but they were not that bad.
dixon

ropefish and senegal bichirs have exceeded my expectations substantially, by their surprisingly active nature.

i dont think ive ever regretted any of my real fish.. can't lose with cichlids.

No regrets here, I like all my fish for what their worth.

Stingrays demand lots of work, so know what your getting into.
I sold mine because of the eating bill and high maintenance.

I'm surprised there are not more disappointments. Most fish I have got have exceeded my expectations. On top of the oscars and snakehead, I loved the senegal bichir I had too, he was much cooler than I thought he would be. Cute and hungry.

The reason the wolf was so disappointing was because I'd wanted one since I was a kid and thought it would be a total killer. I thought it would kill anything I put in the tank with it as soon as it hit the water, like my old snakehead used to do. I was not expecting an active fish, but I was expecting snakehead levels of aggression and voraciousness.

i have been also disapointed with wolves :(
boring!

Discus, clown loaches, pygos, and serras = disappointed.

Definitely attached to the ATF, Dats, Bichirs, cichlids, Siniperca, barramundi, and P bass...

I would like to get an asian aro, but it's too much hassle, overpriced, and beautiful.

I know I'm gonna get flamed over this but I think that discus are boring. NOT boring to look at, they are drop dead gorgeous in appearance. Too much maintenence for a fish that does nothing although breeding them would yield excitement. For those out there that keep discus, no offense! Discus success stories can only be told by people who have been keeping fish for a long time! Gotta agree with piranha45, ropefish are way cool. A tidbit of advice for anyone who gets one. Cover your tank to death, not even one little tiny crevice! They will slither out to their death through the smallest opening in the canopy. Fish that exceed my expectations? Gotta go with loaches and tilapia.
