I have a male convect in a 55 by itself any idea what will get Along with it I was thinking a Rafael catfish or a smaller pleco or possibly a jack Dempsey

The Rafael may work. I had one in my breeding convicts tank till it ate the fry. The JDs will way outgrow the Convict, females getting to 8in males 10in, and would need a bigger tank when fully grown.
If you want to try anything I would go along the lines of Electric Blue acara, Or normal Blue Acara, dwarf cichids like rams or possibly a Jewel cichlid. There could be other without common names I am unfamiliar with.
Best of luck, remember cichlid's each have their own personality and adding new fish could be hit or miss. Don't forget to rearranged the tank prior to adding new fish to the tank since ATM the Convict thinks the whole tank is his. It may be better to put a dither fish in there instead to get more activity in the tank.

I agree a bottom dweller like a Raphael Catfish could work . The EBA and Rams would have a hard time coexisting with a Convict especially an aggressive one. I would suggest the livebearer or Tetra from the same region for tankmates mid level.

I'd be inclined to say most any cichlid, pleco, and larger tetras or similar would get along with it fine. The convicts I've had have all been pretty placid.

Because your convict owns the tank, and considers all of it, its territory(if its been there a week or more), I don't think any other cichlid would be accepted, except a hot to trot female convict.
A catfish might work, but any bottom dweller would also face territorial wrath.
The only other fish I believe would work would be surface dwelling, fast swimming dither fish such as large live bearers (sword tails, mollies) or tetras like Astyanax. These would also be the kind that it might share area with it in nature.

Not to step on anybody's toes but I would not go for rams, elec blue acara, or anything along those lines, they are too peaceful and will probably end up on the chopping block in a 55.
Raphael catfish would probably work, pleco is a good idea. Personally I would recommend you try the catfish and some fast-moving dithers like duanes suggested. Mollies/swordtails/goodeids if you care about being geographically correct, if not then rainbowfish, danios, some barbs, larger tetras would work.
