I need a fish that is similar or larger sized than a jack Dempsey that will be able to fight off and not kill my 2.5" jack Dempsey I am not looking for the most expensive fish but a fairly priced one. So I need something to keep my jack Dempsey in line and not kill it because I need it for breeding as it's one of the best looking fish I've ever seen! So I am willing to spend like $15 tops on a fish that can keep my jack Dempsey from killing the smaller one. I need to get something or else it will be killed so what is the fish that can keep it in line should I just buy a larger jack dempsey like 3" or just let nature take it's course? Or should i buy another fish?

JD won't survive winter in an outdoor pond in NJ.

That being said, you might want to try an oscar. They're cheap and if it's similarly sized/slightly larger than your JD it shouldn't kill it. Just the first thing that comes to mind, but you might find better options.

No guarantee any fish will not kill another. If you only got 2 JDs that is why they are fighting. You need to start out with 5-6 juvies and let them pair off.

Yeah, based on my experience... there really is no real guarantee. I tried doing something like this before and the new fish ended up taking over the tank. Then I had the same problem again. Also, having another more aggressive fish in there doesn't always guarantee that your JD will stop picking on the other fish. He'll just get picked on by one fish, then when he sees the opportunity, he'll bully the same fish he was bullying before.

some times larger non -agg. cichlids become tank cops ,not very often though, maybe a big sev or an oscar. most likely though youll probably end up getting rid of something anyway.or something might end up hurt

I noticed when I bought more mature cichlids like convicts or jewels (which would be larger than the jd at the time) hold there own and become bullies at first... Eventually find harmony as the other fish start growing. My jewel is still the top dog in the tank but doesn't harass the oscars or jds like he use too... Simply because they are all growing larger than he is.
