I have an 8 hour ride from the college home and I learned the hard way that keeping the fish in a half full tank is not the way to transport fish. next time I think that I'll use tupperware. or mason jars. The mason jars worked great for transporting the remaining 2 cory cars back to the college.

What made you decide transporting a half full tank is a bad idea? Lol bet that was fun

i only have tropical fish i use coolers just like they keep things cool they also keep things warm. i bag the fish put them in the cooler then i use hand or foot warmers as a heat source. canadian winters suck. im sure there are better ways but this is within my budget. if you try this do a dry run first with just a thermometer and no fish all depends on the size of the cooler.

It seemed like a good idea but turned out to be a mass genocide. next time I might just use that cooler trick because I'm coming from Maine to Connecticut and I have to drop people off in Boston. What kind of bags do you guys use? Just Zip Lock or is there something special?

cooler and battery air pump never a loss(ok lost a rtc on a 12 hr drive when the pump died after an hr)

Zip lock bags are no good. Just use plastic shipping bags with rubber bands. Here's a link to a supplier: http://www.kensfish.com/shipping-supplies.html

I also use a battery air pump especially if a large fish or group, the pumps are noisy and irritating but well worth it in the end.
For pairs I like to separate them with eggcrate, I always have a permanent bucket at the ready, with a hole punched in the top for the air line.

When I have to transport fish I lay a bag large enough for the cooler I am using and fill the bag, add the fish and tie the top of the bag....this way I have lots of water and I don't have to worry about it sloshing around and spilling all over the place.

I used to use a cooler with no bag lining it, but I would end up with a wet mess....lining the cooler with a bag and tying the bag is what's up.

I just moved all my fish 5 days ago and they luckily seem to be all OK now.. i didn't think temp would change so much but ended up dropping 9 degrees to 68.. i was terrified. If i have to do it again i will put them in a cooler and plug a heater into my car power converter and run a battery air pump.. that seems like it would give quite a long time.
