I have had the same fish in my 100grow out for awhile now (about a month) 4 baby oscars and 7 Silver dollars. Anyway I picked up a new florida gar at the LFS 2 weeks ago and he has been in quarantine for sense than and has had no problems at all so I moved him to the 100 on thursday. On friday morning I noticed the SD acting weird friday night when I got home I noticed one was dead, half its body had turned white but there was no bit marks from the gar so I thought nothing of it. saturday morning ALL the SDs had turned white and were floating. Monday a dead oscar again. half its body was white and now my other 3 oscars are turning white.

As you can see. they are turning white. The gar is completely fine so he must have been the carrier of what ever it is. Currently I'm treating with salt and raised temp. Can anyone tell what exactly is going on disease wise?

That my friend looks like ammonia burn.

I have zero ammonia and it has a 25% water change daily. Filtration is 800gph threw a 30gal wet dry full of scrubbies and a ac110.

well i was gonna say check parameters..but your post is making think more..

ya I know the main filter on the q tank broke so I had to move him. I was treating the tank with salt as a precautionary before I moved the oscars and SDs to the 1500 just to kill any possible ick as treating the 1500 would cost a small fortune.

I do use feeders for the gar but they are kept in a seperate tank so I can gut load them prior to feeding. there have been no deaths in that tank.

So any idea on treatments?

I have twice had fish turn white suddenly.. First was in my own tank of khuli loaches, 3 died overnight (no symptoms prior) and 2 were alive but quickly euthanized when I found them. They were somewhat stiff from swelling, but most of their body had turned white and swollen. I tested everything I could find a test for and nothing came up unusual. This tank had sat with no new additions for at least 8 months so it was nothing new..
A while later (6+ months) I was working at the LFS and had the same thing happen to a tank of black khulis. I caught it with about 7 dead and 4 alive. One I euthanized as I felt it was beyond saving (100% white, swollen and stiff), the other 3 I quickly acclimated to a nursery tank full of molly fry and dumped a whole bunch of NovAqua+. One died, the other 2 recovered in a few days and after a few weeks had no signs of what happened. Again I tested everything I had a test for and nothing came up strange. The 2 survivors eventually (months later) were sold and lived happily for at least 6 months more in their new homes.

Never did find out what caused it, all I know is their skin turned white and without prompt treatment they died. The 2 survivors were about 50-60% white when I moved them. The move and a big dose of NovAqua+ was all I did.
It almost looked like their skin was swelling and coming right off..
