i keep a blood parrot, a "jellybean" (parrot/convict?), a yellow gourami of some sort (they bagged him by accident with a ram, and told me to keep it) and 3 blue/gold rams in with my retic. from feeding the retic live black and frozen blood worms and frozen mysis/cut shrimps everyday, these guys wont touch the commercial flakes or crisps anymore.

granted the colors on the rams are amazing now, is this ok for them in the long run?? while it seems like a decent balanced diet for them, im not sure if their really getting everything they need. not sure if its close enough to a natural diet or not to sustain them. and yes for anyone wondering, the blood parrot is able to catch and eat the worms and food, despite not being able to close his mouth fully.

on the other hand, maybe im just too used to the commercial staple idea after all these years??

it's been my experience that fish will eat the best food made available to them. although mine have never stopped eating flakes I don't see this as a problem for them nutritionally. However, it is probably a lot of work for you. If it becomes a problem you may want to cut back on live/frozen until flakes are accepted again.

if you are in the nyc area where did you pick up a retic?

Fishtown-usa in flushing. right on northern blvd. i was actually happy with their pricing, and most of the fish looked to be in decent health. http://www.fishtown-usa.com

it was sold as the usual "teacup" ray for $34.99, and after some investigating, im pretty sure its a long-tail ray. they also had a hystrix for $90 i believe, and motoros for $130
