Hey everyone,
I have a bumblebee that was in my 180 gallon mixed mbuna tank-about a month ago i noticed her right nostril looked like a fish may have bitten her-where the nostril should have been was a dented sore that was red (it looked like a small pin point ulcer in her nostril). I added more salt, did a good 50 percent waterchange and it looked like it was getting better. i was doing waterchanges on the 180 gallon every other week.
About 2 weeks ago I noticed that where her sore was all the sudden "bloomed" and bulged outward into a cyst type thing that was getting bigger. i immediately took her out, put her in a 10 gallon hospital tank and started medicating her with Jungle Fungus tank buddies.
she has gone through 4 rounds of Jungle fungus-and it just looks bigger, worse. I believe it is a secondary infection due to her being stressed (she is not being picked on that i see-but the tank is very active) and her sore developed a bad bacterial infection. the cyst looks firm- and i dont see stringy stuff coming off it like you would a fungal infection-it doenst look cottony or fluffy but hard and cystlike.
Im at a loss as to what to do. I have one local fish store in my town but can buy meds online.
my question is-have any of you seen this? i believe it is bacterial.
What is a good broad spectrum antibiotic? i have been told to use the jungle fungus, as true fungal infections are rare-and that most are bacterial infections. i even double dosed her yesterday, and its not improving.
should i use Maracyn Plus? what can i do? i dont want to euthanize her.
btw, the tank has been set up for a few years, i do weekly waterchanges now (i was doing them every other week 50 percent). my nitrates stay under 20ppm- i use Prime, some aquarium salt and feed my fish with NLS, krill, spirulina, zucchini, yellow squash, cucumber and a variety of food.
Everyone else in the tank is healthy, eating and active.
thanks so much! Mel
