fishing Hawaii

I am going to be staying in Hawaii at a friends house for a couple of weeks and I hope to do some surf fishing wile I'm there. I have no salt water tackle, no idea about the types of fish in Hawaii, and the only surf fishing I have ever done was for dogfish. I have done lots of trout and bass fishing from bouts and shore but salt water is a new field for me. any information on fish, gear and tactics would help a lot
