Fishing in MD/DC/VA

I have just renewed my freshwater fishing interest since returning to school in DC (I'm from Mass) so I wanted to see what I can catch down there - There seem to be a lot of little ponds and brooks.
Guys, what can I catch down there? And how is the fishing this time of the year? Should I bring a big net for netting through the muck, etc? What should I expect? Any suggestions as to where to go?
