I am not a fisherman, I enjoy the sport but am not the best. I was wandering if I could use a pole ment for fishing in the ocean to catch catfish as succesfully as I could use a $20 walmart pole?

I dont see why not a fishing pole is a fishing pole. As long as your not using a deep drop setup for bass or something it should work

i would say itd be overkill and you could possibly lose more fish my jerking the hook out of their mouth, by setting the hook too hard. i think the the flexibility of the pole plays a huge part in hooking the fish. if you have a 10lb fish getting a hook yanked on it by a pole set for 100lb fish, plus you wouldn't have any feel on the line since your pole wouldn't bend when a little fish hit your line.

exactly. the rod and reel setup plays a huge factor. you could catch some fish but if you want to do it right, then match your gear for that certain type of fishing.

I see no problem with that. Try it and adjust from there. Use what you have and make the best of it. You can even use a can, sting, a hook and weight. Been doing that for years when i was a little kid and didn't have no money. Just work with what you got.

i mainly fish rivers for cat but i see people all the time using huge surf setups for them. seems to work pretty well.

that is exactly what i do......really depends on what your trying to catch

Its already been said before, but I see it all the time. Dont go buy a marlin or tuna rig, but a nice salt surf set-up will do wonders for catfish. Just read on cabelas or bass pro for a few hours some brands even market their rods for both.

I personally use my surf pack rod I bought in hawaii for catfish. It is just an inexpensive collapsable surf rod I bought (wanted to make sure I could take it back in my bag with me). Paired with a Shimano 4000 I got for like 12 bux in hawaii. Works awesome, and If I snag a larger fish and get scared Im gonna snap the tip of the rod off I can just collapse the tip section. Not proper technique, but keeps me from snapping my rod into pieces. Plus its super easy to carry around because its only like 2 feet long broken down.
