We go to Oman twice a year for fishing , for those unfamiliar with Muslim holidays , ours are determined by the Lunar calander , and they're called Eid al Fitr , and Eid al Adha. anyway every Eid we go down there for some of the best fishing I've ever seen! The pics I posted up on the "post your biggest catch" threads are all from the last Eid a few months ago. granted that was a bad and windy season , we didn't come back home empty handed.
The next Eid Holiday is coming up soon , and we're leaving for Masira Island in Oman on the 25th. This Island is 90km long and about 25 Km Wide and the only semblence of civilization is a small fishing town. The beaches feel untouched by human feet , and the coastal waters are like a highway for all the popular game your fishing heart desires --- and some wierd stuff you've probably never seen before. We've cuaught everything from brown spotted Groupers to Breams of all forms , Mackrel , Snappers , Tuna , Mullets.... some nuisance fish are unedible Triggers and Eels. Only catch we don't like is the kind we can't eat. Lobster in Oman is great if you're a snorkler, you can pick em up with your hands since they don't have claws.
Masira translates to "Fate" hence the Isle of fate. I recommend this place to anyone who plans on fishing in the middle east. The water's right on the Indian Ocean so expect to catch ANYTHING. Dorado's and Billfish frequent the waters too (please release the bills if you catch em... get a camera ready though!!)). There are no services on the Island except for two bare bones hotels and food is all local cooking. no fast food chains. there's a few fishing stores but I recommend you bring your own gear for this.
Your choice of tackle aside , A beach rod/reel combo is a must.
I'll try and remember to take pics to show.
