I have done some reading on it and understand it for the most part. My question is in the use of cycled bio material to add. I can get a sponge from an established tank (bro n laws)...or I could squeeze out the junk in my tetra pondfilter thats on my outdoor pond. If I were to squeeze out the pond filter...where would I put that mucky water? If I used the sponge from a tank where would I need to put it...anywhere in the tank or on top of the scrubbies im using? The pond filter sponge is kinda big to put in the tank someplace...thats why I was thinking of squeezing it out. Also if I just squeezed it out about a week and a half ago...has the bio population regrown to be worth squeezing it in my tank. I would rather use my bro n laws sponge....but will use the mucky pond one if its better.

Also the tank sponge is under a drip tray not under water....the pond sponge is in a pressure filter so its under water. Isnt there 2 different types of bacteria in that case. Would the tank sponge still be effective under water?

After more reading this is really the only question I have left. My filter on the pond and my bro n laws filter have both been rinsed about a week to a week and a half ago. My bro n laws stuff might have been cleaned in tap water....mine in pond water. So how long does it take for them to gain a full bacteria colony?

Pond water should not affect it negatively(being as its dechlorinated and its not a shock to the BB). I would go with the pond filter provided your pond fish are healthy and disease free. However a sponge rinsed under tap water will have lost 90% of its beneficial bacteria. If your using it in a wet dry squeeze the sponge above your wet dry. Then submerge the sponge in the tank or put it in a HOB but keep it submerged. Either way make sure the sponge came from a healthy eco system as I crashed a tank once by squeezing my friends sponge in my tank. The fish were itching like crazy 48 hours later and I had a parasite out break.

Hope this helps buddy ,

Yeah my koi are fine...and I will use my sponge since I think my bro rinsed his under tap. I will squeeze them over the scrubbies :D
