Today i picked up my first ever pbass, he is only 2" and in a 30 gal quarantine tank at the moment. I plan to feed him up a bit then transfer him to a 90 gall untill hes say 12" then he can go into my 10ft tank with the other big fish.

Question i have is what its the best diet for a little one ? i have some high quality high protien pellets, blood worms and all the usuall big fish fare of shellfish, shrimp etc.

any pbass advice welcome, and yes i am fully aware of how big it gets im hoping to get him to max out in size if i can, also plan to aquire some more if all goes well.

cheers

I have lots of little & medium sized bass at the moment. I too just started keeping bass this past year. It has become a full time hobby that I love! From what I have seen the small ones really only take to bloodworms (& feeders of course) while they are little, & the next thing they have accepted for me is freeze dried krill... That is usually when they are big enough the little worms are not a satisfying meal. Once they start taking krill, I start to try to get them taking massivore/carnivore pellets.

The best diet is a varied one. It's a good idea IMO to get him on a quality pellet early, but at the same time I wouldn't starve a baby pbass. Frozen blood worms until he gets some size if he ignores pellets, once he gets bigger all the usual stuff- tilapia filets, good pellet, market shrimp, mine live prawns. Most Pbass I've come across aren't that picky. Keep the temp up (86ish) and keep em fat. Lol. I'm sure the Cichla OG's will fill in anything I missed. Good luck, and PICS!!!! Lol

cheers, what growth rate should i expect ? i would guess as its a big cichlid 1-2" per month ?

I tried a few bloodworms today he chased them but didnt really attack, i can give him some convict fry to play with if it comes to it but i tend to avoid feeding live fish to my tropicals.

i will increase the temp, and put an extra air stone in.

i will try and get a pic but i have the lights off at the moment. does anyone alter the ph of the water for pbass ? i could go with an ro/tap mix.

Pellets are the best diet....once you finally get them eating them.
If you can keep rays you can keep cichla.
They just need clean warm water and full bellies.

My advise would be get a couple now, they will grow together so later on down the line you won't be trying to mix odd sizes but personally, i think they thrive in a pack, when ever i've saw a single cichla, or just a due they've not had that same personality.

Im hoping to pick up a few more in a few weeks as there a shipment of five coming into the shop, i wont get all of them but i reckon three will be ok.
Will try and get a pic tomorrow if he wants to come out and play.

What species is it? Pics?
