fitting the glass on a plywood tank

When you fit the glass with silicone do you fit the glass in the plywood for the window or do you use a peice of glass slightly bigger for you window and stick it behind the front panel to create the window. Is hard to explain lol basicaly do you slot it in the plywood for a window or put it behing the plywood
 
put it behind... a 2"-3" overlap is a good safe bet, depending on the size of the window. this will also allow the water pressure to help hold the glass in place.
 
I have seen designs that incorporate a shelf lip on the inside of the front panel just under the window, about 2 - 3 inches below the opening for the glass to sit on. This helps to alleviate unnecessary strain on the silicone (which isn't meant to Hold the glass/acrylic, just seal) at times of reduced water level i.e. - initial setup, water changes .....
