one of my tanks bottoms cracked last night n caused heavy leakage... i emptied a tank and baught a smaller temporary replacement. but i want to get it fixed. would it work to just get another piece of glass n silicone it over the crack?

yeah, you could silicone all over the cracks both sides and silicone the glass on the bottom and put some polystyrene in the tank for even pressure.
Have a piece of 1/4" glass cut to the inside dimensions of your tank. Remove all silicone from inside the tank and clean with alchol. skin the bottom glass with silicone and place new piece inside the tank and let cure overnight. Reseal the entire tank. let cure for 7 days and then test to see if water tite.
This will work assuming the broken bottom glass is stable and self supportive.

my base cracked a couple of days ago, so i bought a new one, a 4by2 peice of glass was £60$120 and a new tank was £80$160 so it wasnt worth tring to fix it
