I know one can simply patch a crack on the bottom of a tank, can the same be done on a side. Its a 180 with a crack on one of the 2X2 sides, could it just be patched? I guess my question is if a tank cracks on the side isn't it the same as the bottom, except you can see it, so maybe putting an overflow or a fake rock structure over it?

Hello; hard to say without more information, but my first thought is no. The tank location would be a key for me. If it is in a basement or garage on a slab where failure will not do damage to floors and such, then I might try a patch. On a wooden floor or on a carpeted floor the risk of damage to my home would put me off.
I have patched small tanks but not one as big as a 180.
