got the gar friday, and he still doesn't really come out much, i mostly only see him swimming around in the morning with the lights out, otherwise he chills behind some rocks and wood.

I had a small fish in there with him to see what he'd do... took a few days, but the fish is gone. So i thought, ok, he's adapted and ready to eat, but I haven't been able to get him to come out let alone eat anything else. Is it normal to take this long for them to adjust and become more active?

fish is still hiding almost two weeks later, and will not eat the pellets. what the heck is wrong with this fish? they are supposed to be diurnal right?

12 inches
125 (72x18)
no tankmates
the pellets i've been trying are nls xxl or somehting like that, floating, but so far I haven't even seen him taste it, when I watched him go right at pellets in the previous owner's tank before I bought him.

I did place that tetra i mentioned in the tank, and I placed another one hoping to try and stimulate some activity, and make sure he's still wants to eat and not sick. the second tetra lasted a couple of days, then one morning it was gone. it seems like it's a little more active at night, and that's definately when the tetra disappeared, assuming the gar ate it. I'd hate to keep putting fish in the aquarium, and i'm going out of town for a few days, so i'm worried about it since it hasn't eaten in a few days as it is, but also hoping that when I get home it will be moving around looking for food and readily accept food. I am just surprised as to how active it was in the other guy's tank, and how shy it is in mine.

ime, gar are smart.. which in a nut-shell makes them harder to adjust at times. and it may be as simple as the tank he's use to is now compleately different.. and some stranger is peering at him. One of my gar took weeks to settle in, another approx 2 days.. and the last ate less then an hour out of the bag. individual personalities play a big part imo. the longest to settle is also now the least dominant fish in the tank. Where there other fish in the tank he was in prior? what size was it?

Personally I would offer him live foods until he's better adjusted.
