How is traffic on Route 1 from 75 - down from Miami to the Keys?

I'm thinking of doing that drive just for fun - go down the Keys to Key West. Or is it a waste of time?

What will I see along the way?

save time by taking the florida turnpike south it ends just beyond the homestead area on US1 just a little north of florida city....if you drive US1 from its start up in miami it will take you forever. also a very good fishing spot is on your way to the keys on us1 just outside of florida city the road(us1) necks down to 2 lanes...approx 10-15min south is aerojet canal...you can pull off a dirt road on the left just before the bridge that goes over it(the 1st small bridge you will encounter)...you can drive up this gravel road along the canal to the left for approx 200yrds where the fresh/saltwater gate is...good fishing ;)
as for the keys...ehhh...not much fun unless you have a saltwater boat...there is alot of traffic and IMO not much to see other than bridges and water;)
also saw another thread you had about gators...if you plan on heading south past florida city google "everglades alligator farm" it is there near the entrance to everglades national park...the canal just outside of the park entrance "parkside canal" is full of peacocks, gators ect ;)

Wow - awesome! Thanks!

Just watched the first video - is most of Florida like that - all "plains" and very dry, trees dead?? This is very different from the "lush tropics" I had envisioned?

Where did the oscars come from? Gorgeous specimens

'cause if I ask specific questions in each thread, I get straight answers without clutter lol

If you're heading down US 1 to Key West, some of the old bridges in the "Overseas Highway" have been converted to Fishing piers. A few of the more popular ones are the old bridges on Channel #2 and Channel #5 around mile markers 70 to 72. On these bridges you may fish on the Gulf of Mexico on one side and the Atlantic on the other side. Another popular one is the old Seven Mile bridge.

For a change of scenery you may detour on to Card Sound Road from US1 which will take you back to US 1 and pass through a fishing Village with a tavern where the "Alabama Jacks" play and it will also take you through a Crocodile sanctuary. Some good fishing and crabbing on this route too. Just watch for the folks on the short bridges making their casts or cars parked on the side of the road with their owners fishing nearby creeks with brackish water.

Cool - thanks! What kind of fish are found in these canals/brackish water spots?
