Hi, does anyone know the growth rate of a Flag tail Characin ( Semaprochilodus insignis )? And how long could one live in a 55 gallon fish tank? Any one with experience with these fish would be helpful.

mine went from 3 inches to 13 inches in two years in a 50 gallon breeder I sold him then and seen one at my lfs who was 17 inches when I sold my 13 inch fish, wish I would have kept him he was very mellow and cool looking. How big is yours currently?

Mine is growing out in a 55 until he's big enough to go in the 150 and not get eaten. I've had him a few months now and growth had been slow. He's grown maybe half an inch, if that. I expect I can keep him in the 55 for maybe a year.

Never had one Allan... Thinking about it though. I heard their growth is mostly slow, with some exceptions growth being quicker than expected like yours. I've got a standard 55 gallon, so if I got one I'm wondering how long I could keep him in the 55 before I needed to upgrade to a 150.

Like others stated, their growth is pretty slow, this is from everything I have read on them

I've had a couple and they actually grow fairly quick. Had one that started around 3" and sold about a year later at 13-14". They have an unusual mouth similar to a kissing gourami so as long as you feed foods that they can readily eat they will grow rapidly.
