Where ever i'm at!
Is it normal for them to suck air, or breathe at the surface? I have great surface movement and none of my other fish do this. So I just want to know if this is a common behavior for them or even maybe if they are air breathers?

Its is gasping for air? or just randomly going up the surface?

I can tell u that u should watch out for it.. The two Fei Fengs that i currently own do not and have not done that before.. I also have a spray bar on my tank for surface movement, I haven't seen my Fei fengs suck air..

Usually in cases like this.. something is wrong... but i doubt its low oxygen level.. Does it do it constantly? or does it do it only during feeding?

Seems to be mostly after feeding or a water change.

Do u use water conditioners by chance? That could be one reason for the gasping/suck air...

PS.. what do u feed ur fei feng?

I feed a variety of foods for all my fish, but its seems that the Fei Feng is mostly interested in sucking on algae and sucking on the driftwood.

Ya.. its an herbivore and sometimes an omnivore.... My eats algae slime from driftwood and cucumbers i feed to plecos..

Along with whatever meat scape is left behind.. good cleanup crew..

Back to topic... I would keep monitoring it.. make sure theres no disease... what not.... Because Characins like Fei Fengs do not gasp for surface air..

I have one and I have never seen him come up for air. I would try to get him eating heavier foods other than alge and driftwood.

As far as surfacing, maybe the water temp you are adding is to cold or warm and it shocks him? Could be just the Tap water too. I over treat my water from Tap by 1/2-1Cap full of Prime for 360glns (300gl+60gl Sump that is half full and the extra 1/2-1cap full of Prime... usually do 7 Prime Caps for 50% water change)

Just keep an eye on him but if hes eating then hopefully he just likes to surface :)

I have one that does the same thing, he acts totally healthy but will do this once in a while. im not really that concerned.

My flagtail does the same thing. I have had him for like 4 months and he has always done it. He even spits out bubbles. But he eats fine and is always active. My emperor 400 makes alot of little bubbles so he mainly goes for them. I thought it was wierd at first, but none of my other fish hang out at the surface so I just assumed the flaigtail was fine.
