i've had my flagtail for ~2months now and when i first got it the lips looked normal. now it seems that the lips have receded alot, so much so that it only looks kinda like it used to when it sucks at things. im just wondering if it is normal or not. i got it when it was ~4" and now it is pushing ~6-7". will try to post pics when i get home.

I got mine as a Vday gift, and for the first few weeks it looked like it had Angie Jolie lips. Unless he gets excited now, he has the normal barb "lips" but if it's excited, "NOM NOM NOM NOM" lips. This is my first flag, so I am not sure, I would be interested to know too, is this something related to nutrition? Or environment? or personality?

Post some pics, I've never heard of anything like that... what's his diet? Sounds like some sort of nutritional deficiency or something...

looks like the pic that is posted...maybe 2" longer and some more pronounced dots on the body. i feed it massivore, carnivore, shrimp, and bloodworms. it cant really eat whole pellets but it does swallow the smaller pieces i break up for my indos. definitely likes to tear up my anubius plants...
anyways just wondering if anyone else has had this problem, or if its a problem.

I just went thru a bunch of adult flag pics, and most of them show what you are describing. Mine eats the same thing, and will spend about 15 minutes sucking on algae wafers until they dissolve. Does yours act like shrimp is crack?? Mine will take it and swim circles in the tank so that the clown loaches won't take it from him.

lol thats funny. it tries to hold onto its food, but usually drops the food after sucking on it for a few seconds and then my silver dollars or dats will rob it. if it cant swallow it then it ends up picking up the food off the ground that doesnt get eaten.

Flagtails can expand and retract their lips (similiar to a fish opening and closing its mouth) to form a suction cup effect, allowing them to graze upon various surfaces. What you are seeing is perfectly normal.
