Hi all,

For a 5x2x2 tank, can I keep 3 pieces of Flagtail Prochilodus 10" each without big fights?

Thank you.

I read they need to be kept in groups of 5 or 6 as there is a strong conspecific aggression in this species. I keep mine singly in a 5x2x3 and he does great hes only 5-6" though they are pretty slow growers.

you can try 3 together as adults, but I know the young ones would beat the crap out of eachother until you have one left

how many you reckon is good?
I have one right now, thinking of adding 2 more same size 9"/10" ones

thanks for the reply!

No problem dude glad I could help. i personally wouldn't put any less than 5 in a tank but then you might find its a bit overcrowded. you could always try the three but keep a really careful close eye on them. any sign of aggression then you should be prepared to remove or seperate them. It's one of the best parts of fishkeeping, learning to practise your judgement. I recently had to act on behalf of my new giant gourami that was being picked on by my oscar who is a major bully, now I moved the oscar out the whole tank has a great balance now. I got one more question though, were these 3 housed together at the store without incident? if so you may have 3 laid back flag tails who tolerate eachother well. and that is pretty cool. after all not all fish have the temprement that they are supposed to have.

I got one now. Thinking of getting 2 more but those are also kept in separate tanks too.

I am not too sure about the aggression of the three.

I used to have a pretty aggressive Mayan but I jailed it for a month in a small tank and when I placed it back, it became quite tolerable.

Yeah I have heard that works, but when I moved my oscar into the smaller growout, I moved the smaller fish from the growout into the big tank and they are doing great. the only thing in the big tank that would eat them is the oscar.

If I was you, if you really want to try this then you should negotiate with the store owners first, tell them you're not sure if the mix will work and that you may bring the fish back in a few days if things don't work out. most stores will have like a return policy or whatever. that way youre not loosing any money and you won't lose any of the flagtails if they do get aggressive. just make sure you have somewhere to seperate them to, even buckets.

My little flagtail is peaceful to all my fish but when I put something in there that he can eat he goes hyper aggressive chasing and biting anyone who tries to take his food.

ps, I used to have a 10" female Mayan, she was so mean I couldn't keep ANYTHING with her, constant glass banging

You can read all about them and people saying to keep them in groups. Truth is 95% of the time you will start out with a group and they will slowly kill each other starting with the smallest weakest one until only the single strongest one is alive. They only work long term as a single fish. They do fine with almost all other fish, but can not be house in groups. Please take my advise and keep only one flagtail. Even my 220 wasnt big enough to house more than 1. They are amazing fish though and I hated loosing my big guy...

As was said in last post---1 per tank unless you have a 1000 gallon plus pond to put them in. They are a real peaceful awesome fish but when you put in more than one all hell breaks loose, The stronger will persue the others till it is the only prochilodus in the tank. I learned the hard way.
