Is the flakes that fall off my heater bad for my fish? What the hell is that stuff anyways?

It's probably just mineral deposits, like calcium and sodium, probably harmless.

:iagree:
definitley mineral deposits. may be due to hard water. which is really not that big of a deal

As a rule fish don't eat things bad for them...usually.

If it is just a calcium build-up, you can soak the unit in vinegar for a few hours to desolve it then wash & rinse well before putting back into the tank.

I came into work yesterday and noticed they moved the tank but didn't put the heater back correctly. It was floating in the tank, hot, and had mineral deposits on it. I know our water is hard so I just fixed the heater back into place and it dissolved in no time.

Now here's the thing...I've always had hard water. It was only till I was dropping the ph for my rays when I noticed the build up. I'd disregard it if it wasnt so gross-looking on my black sand. The contrast sucks cause I have black sand and this whiteist grey crap all over the ground. If fish dont typically eat things that are bad for them why do they insist on tasting EVERYTHING!!!

A solution can only hold so much solute before it gets saturated and drops out of solution. Use some R/O water to combat that.

It's all over the bottom (under water)? I was under the impression that it was just on the exposed part of the heater...

Can you post a pic?

Your sure it's not an algae right?

Does it come off when you vacuum the substrate? (just laying on top)

I asked but didn't get an answer on the tasting thing, so I'm going to guess and say they do it to see if it is good to eat...:grinno:

Sometimes they are getting algae off of it too.

Except for a pleco that ate his way thru 3 layers of fiberglass to get to the plywood...What a mess that was.
