When I was in the lab today cutting off the waste material on a few samples I noticed how nice they would be in the aquarium hobby. This is one of the examples. The benefits are that the rock has a perfectly flat surface. This means there is no point load pressure on the glass and greatly distributes the weight. It creates a stable base as well, minimizing shifts in the aquascape or a falling rock scape. They can be placed flat against the back glass and bottom of the tank using two cuts creating a 3D background or cliff face.

I used to just use slate if i wanted flat sheets of rock to tie moss down or sometimes hold down pieces of wood that was still floating...

True, slate definitely wouldnt work too well as an actual hardscape material on its own being so flat...

Ive got a few pieces of granite and flagstone ive been trying to incorporate into scapes for awhile like this. Ive heard dow corning 795 binds to rock very well, been thinking of tryong some suspended rock shelves in some of my junkier tanks to try it out.
