At lfs today saw a tank labeled amphilophus flaveolus "barred midas". I was always under the impression that all midas barred and otherwise fell under the classification citrinellum. Never heard of flaveolus. They were all about 1" and looked like your generic amphilophus they all look like at this size. So my questions: 1. is amph. Flaveolus a separate species from citrinellum? 2. Is flaveolus really a "barred midas"? 3. What the hell is an amphilophus flaveolus?

Amph flaveolus is a different species, looks almost the same as a barred midas, just a very slightly different profile, more streamlined. That's my understanding anyway I might be wrong wouldn't be the first time.

RD, I'm glad you put that up, the radiation of Nicaraguan Amphilophus into many species is akin the cichlid radiation in the African great lakes, just on a smaller scale. I believe after more research, there will be even more species.
I have kept Amphilophus amarillo, labiatus, and A flaveolus, and though closely related, are to me also very different.
amarillo

flaveolus

and though this may or may not be included in Amphilophus at some point, uropthalmus
