I have also more furry friends than those in my tanks so I really want to give a pre-fall flea treatment to our house to rid the place of any unwelcome visitors of the insectoid kind.

I'm petrified of wiping out my tanks, and would appreciate any guidance or advice from others who have successfully handled this type of practice before.

Thanks in advance! :)

We use advantage to keep the fleas off my cats and i am just careful not to pet the cats much (at all?) for a few days after they have had their advantage. I have not wiped out my fish yet since i got back into the hobby a couple months ago. Even with cats climbing on top of tank, their hair ending up in the tank etc. I usually try to remember to rinse my hands in tapwater without soap before putting them in tanks. We don't use the advantage monthly like the packages say to. Instead, more like 3 times a year per animal and somehow they don't have fleas.

Advantage on the hairy pets is best, least dangerous way about it. If there are any fleas anywhere in your house, they cannot survive without a host, so they are likely on your pets already. I swear by Advantage.

^agreed

failing that if you do need to spray around the house (i've had to do it once or twice) put a thick towel or something on top of the tank, covering all openings, spray like mad around the room, let everything settle, then open a window and turn a fan on for 10-15 minutes. that's all i did just to be safe.

My cat would never let me get away with this! :grinno:

Ive had the exterminator at my house on two occasions, just be sure they or you use liquid if spraying the house holding the wand down close to the carpet. Don't use aerosols as they become airborn. Never had an issue. I did follow them around my tanks as to be sure they didn't lift the wands up high though, didn't want to turn my back on them. I have also purchased my own
commercial grade pesticides and do it myself now without any issues.
