Well i have my tank set with an overflow and a large sponge as a prefilter b4 the water enters the sump. Lately i see all these little flies and a massive ammount of small little black worms in the filter media. Any idea what they are? how to kill them? or prevent them from coming back?

Ill post pics in a bit .

Get rid of the worms and you will get rid of the flies. Here we have midges (the look like mosquitos) and their larva are red worms. If you pour them down your drain, they will live in the P trap until they mature. Then you will have a swarm of flies in the house.

Syphon them out and pour them on the lawn. They will die without standing water. Also remove the sponge and rinse it outside. A soak in an alcohol solution will help kill any larva that didn't get rinsed out.

Cover the sump maybe?

The only way to keep them out is by making covers for everything. If the adult fly can find any way to the water, they will lay their eggs in it. Tight covers will keep the adults out.
