I couldn't get duckweed to survive in my tanks because my HOB filters kept pushing them down and they got stuck in the filter intake. I want to re-do this in a different tank running on sponge filters and a canister. How badly will the bubbles from the sponge filters affect the plants?

It really depends on how much bubbles you are going to have. It will most likely push the floating plants to one side of the tank. Duckweed never seems to make it in my tank. I think the gouramis eat it all.
