what type of floating plants would do good in a 4-5 foot pond i want to help hide my fish that way hawks, cranes and other evil birds cant get them i was thinking water lettace or water hyacince?
Water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) are nice choices. Try some Nymphaea lotus but you'll need to place it in pot with substrate. Avoid the duckweeds though as they tend to overrun the whole pond quickly and may clog up the filters.
Water hyacinth and water lettuce are nice for a pond, unfortunately they are now considered noxious weeds and/or invasive plants and have been made illegal to keep in many states (Fl is one of them), so check your state laws before you order or pick from local waters. I've been suggesting them for years for filtration but have to find something else now (nothing quite like them tho ).
Lilies are your best bet for shade, just stay away from leaves that can support a large bird .
Lettuce and Hyacinth are great choices and very low maint. Lilles need a little (very little) more attention. Still a great choice. I use 4" PVC fittings in fall/spring when my lillies are up yet, probally going to try 4" perf. drain tile this year. The black color will not be so unsightly.
