I just got home to find my newest motoro floating. He was is in a forty long, to beef him up a little, before hitting the big tank. I'm running the water tests now. I can't see it being a dissolved oxygen issue because there's a bubbler and two sponge filters. any ideas? thanks for the help. sorry I didnt have time to search and my computer is being a real
f---tard.

I once had a pregnant motoro who would float a lot when the lights are out and she still gave birth to healthy pups. I wouldn't worry if I were you, so long as it's eating fine and active.

water parameters are a little off.

ph 7 normal for my place
nitrate 20-40
ammonia is 1-2 which is high
nitrate is 0

so I started with a good w/c and vac . I keep a pretty tight w/c schedule on his tank seeing that its real small. His underside doesn't appear to be pink. could this have been from an ammonia spike? For now he's back on the bottom with normal respiration. but not very active. thanks for any help.

Unusual behavior check for ammonia.
Ammonia present likely explains unusual behavior.

If you do frequent large changes, a huge change should be fine - and it's what I'd do. Fix the spikes, most likely he'll come round fine.

He munched on a few pellets last night. Bought him some night crawlers for dinner tonight, but haven't given him any yet. Did a 50% WC, he is just hanging out in the corner right now.

The ammonia spike theory is very likely the case, it probably was what my motoro once faced.

I would add some prime when u do your water changes and stay on top of testing ur water to see if it get's better...

An ammonia spike in an established tank is unusual. Make sure to clean your filter sponges in tank water for a while so you don't deplete your bacteria during this critical time. Also, you may want to add more used filter media from other tanks for the time being. Even if it's just sitting in the tank it will help process your ammonia.

Although it sounds like the ammonia is gone for now, it could rise again. It's best to take precautionary measures.
